This week, Kate and Lucy travelled to UC Davis to attend HFM 2018. While there, Kate gave a poster on her latest results on inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid quantum kagome antiferromagnets, including new data from the MuSR and GEM instruments at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility, and Lucy gave a talk on magnetic frustration on the emergent honeycomb network in the rare-earth magnet, terbium indate. It was a really fun and interesting week, with particular scientific highlights with talks from Prof Bella Lake (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin) on a breathing kagome bilayer system, Dr Kemp Plumb (Brown University) on a novel fluoride pyrochlore material, and Dr Martin Mourigal (Georgia Institute of Technology) on triangular antiferromagnets.
Ahead of the conference, Lucy also travelled to Rice University in Houston, Texas to catch up with friend of the group Dr Alannah Hallas, currently working in the Department of Physics and Astronomy with Prof Emilia Morosan. In July 2019, Alannah will be moving to the University of British Colombia to set up her research group within the Stuart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute. Thanks for the great visit, Alannah!
