Graduation Day 2019

See if you can spot Lucy amongst the Physical Sciences Academics

Friday was a very exciting day for our group as our three Masters students graduated from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Adam and Brendan received their MChem’s whilst Jen received her MPhys after four years of hard work. It was also very exciting as this was Lucy’s first graduation experience as an academic. Despite the appalling weather that flattened everyone’s hair, it was a great day of celebration for everyone!

We are also very proud of Jen who was awarded the HWB Skinner Prize for Best MPhys Project from the Department of Physics. Her project targeted possible rare-earth materialisations of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid ground state and although it didn’t work at all (!!), that hasn’t put her off returning in September to start her PhD in the group.

Brendan and Adam have also decided to continue and will both be starting PhDs this Autumn. Adam will be joining Professor Eddie Pelan’s group in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, where he will be working on analysing the structure and dynamics of tertiary solvent mixtures of water, ethanol and sugar. Brendan will be joining Dr Daniel Lewis’ group in the Department of Materials at the University of Manchester, where he will be working on doping two-dimensional materials.
