This month, Amie attended the Neutron Training Course at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. This involved a poster session, lectures, practical experiments and tutorials with fellow PhD students in the neutron scattering community. The practical experiments covered crystal alignment and sample mounting on a range of instruments at ISIS. In terms of software, Amie received training on Mantid, FullProf and SPINVERT. Amie learned a lot during this course, as it covered a range of different techniques from neutron diffraction to neutron spectroscopy. This will prove very useful for Amie, whose thesis focuses on inelastic neutron scattering studies of kagome MOF magnets.
The course coincided with Europe’s longest street fair in Abingdon – which is where the students stay during the course – and lots of fun was had on the bumper cars! Many of the students stayed during their free weekend during the course, so Amie spent this time with the other students and visited London and Oxford.
